Hampton Roads · Community Conversations

Hampton Roads runs deep.
So do we.

We use music, books and pop culture as the way in — then talk honestly about the things most rooms skip over. Nothing to study first. No pressure to share.

A facilitated community conversation — not therapy, not a lecture, not a debate club. No cost to attend. Donations keep it that way, but they’re never expected.

What actually happens

Every session starts somewhere familiar — a song, a book, a story everybody knows — and goes as deep as the room decides to take it.

  1. 01Arrive
  2. 02Open together
  3. 03Small circles
  4. 04Talk, or listen
  5. 05Close together

About ninety minutes. Nobody gets called on. Nobody has to perform.

Guided prompts

No awkward small talk. Each session is built around prepared questions designed to open a real conversation rather than fill silence.

Small circles

For larger turnouts we split into smaller groups, so nobody is performing for a crowded room.

Sharing is optional

Plenty of people come the first time and just listen. That counts as participating.

Held with care

Ground rules get said out loud at the start. If a topic lands heavier than expected, resource cards are available on the tables — no announcement, no questions asked.

Still deciding?

This might be your room if…

Almost everyone comes alone the first time. That is the normal way to arrive.

You have thoughts you never get to say out loud anywhere else.

You’re new to the area and want people, not small talk.

You like a good conversation more than a good argument.

Being understood by your neighbors is something most rooms never make room for.

You’re 22 or 72 and tired of rooms that only hold one of those.

You would rather leave a little changed than a little entertained.

Sessions come from you

Is there a conversation you’ve been waiting for someone else to start?

Every session on our calendar started as something a person was already sitting with. If you have one, send it over — we read every suggestion, and plenty of them end up on the schedule.

  • A song you can’t stop thinking about
  • A question that keeps you up
  • Something nobody talks about

Questions people ask

The practical things — answered plainly.

What does it cost?

Nothing. There’s no admission, no dues, and no membership fee. Donations help us keep it that way, but they’re never expected and never asked for at the door.

Is this therapy or a support group?

No. Let’s Unpack That is a peer-led community discussion group centered on shared human experiences. It is not group therapy, medical advice, or a crisis intervention service. Some conversations get personal — that’s the nature of the topics — but nobody here is treating anyone.

Can I come alone?

Almost everyone does. Coming alone is the normal way to arrive, not the exception.

Do I have to talk?

No. Plenty of people come the first time and just listen. That counts as being there. Nobody gets called on and nothing gets forced.

Do I need to prepare or read anything?

Nothing. Every session starts from something familiar — a song, a story, something most people already know. Bring yourself and that’s enough.

How often do you meet, and where?

Every other week, at community venues around Hampton Roads. Each session’s exact date, time and location is posted on Meetup as it’s confirmed.

Are all the topics heavy?

No — and that’s deliberate. The calendar alternates. Some sessions sit with genuinely difficult subjects; others are lighter conversations built around pop culture, a book, or a short story over coffee. Topics are always announced ahead of time, so you can pick the ones that fit where you are.

What happens after I RSVP?

You show up. Ground rules are said out loud at the start, we open together, break into smaller circles if the room is large, and close with whatever’s worth carrying out the door. Roughly ninety minutes.
