Let’s Unpack That started because something was missing in Hampton Roads. There were plenty of places to meet people — and almost nowhere to actually talk to them.
Most rooms stop at the small talk. This one starts after it. The idea was simple: pick the subjects people are already turning over privately, put them on the table, and see what happens when a room of strangers decides to be honest at the same time.
It turns out a lot of people were waiting for that.

Our approach
Hard conversations need a container. These four things don’t bend.
Heard before challenged
Facilitation starts with making people feel understood. Pushback happens, but it comes from care rather than point-scoring.
The room stays in the room
Everyone agrees not to repeat what others share. It’s a community agreement we take seriously — not a legal or clinical guarantee — so share at the level you’re comfortable with.
Everyone gets a chair
Inclusion is stated plainly rather than assumed. Nobody has to earn their place at the table before speaking.
Plain language only
No jargon, no gatekeeping, no reading list to catch up on. If a word needs a footnote, we use a different word.

If we’re going to accept money, we should be clear about where it goes.
A nonprofit corporation
Let’s Unpack That is incorporated as a Virginia nonstock corporation. Our federal 501(c)(3) application is pending with the IRS.
Run by volunteers
Nobody draws a salary. Sessions are organized and facilitated by people who live here and wanted this to exist.
Where money goes
Donations cover venue costs, printed materials, and supplies — the things that keep sessions free to attend.
Tax deductibility
Once our 501(c)(3) determination letter arrives, donations become tax-deductible. We’ll say so here the day that changes.
For venues & organizations
Bring a conversation to your space
Libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, community centers, campuses — if you have a room and a community, we’ll bring the conversation. Sessions stay free to attend either way.
